Now that you have your design printed in wax, its time to sprue your piece. In casting, a sprue is the passage through which a molten material is introduced into a mold, and the term also refers to the excess material which solidifies in the sprue passage.
The next step is to invest your piece, a process based on and also called lost-wax casting, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. From 5,000 years ago, when beeswax formed the pattern. the investing process is to take The entire wax assembly and to pour a silicon slurry into a flask which is then cured in a kiln. This creates your mold to be used in the casting process. This is a sacrificial mold however a duplicate can be made with ease through the 3D printing process.
The final step of the process is finishing and polishing your piece. The polishing and finishing process begins with rough precious metal forms created during jewelery casting. A jewelers saw is used to remove the piece from the sprue. A wide array of machines and hand held tools to remove uneven or rustic surfaces from the metal. Wheels and bits used with a rotary machine are used to shape and contour surfaces. The next stages include lighter polishing mediums that reveal a brilliant shine. Once the desired polish is achieved, various textures and finishes can be applied to specified surfaces of jewelry to add character or enhance the design.
